Last updated: 11 Comments

A search engine, in a layman’s language, is the tool that enables people to look for just anything, information, product, service, or entertainment. However, if we look for its professional definition, we can move towards Wikipedia, Webopedia, and BusinessDictionary.

“A web search engine is a software system that is designed to search for information on the World Wide Web,” says Wikipedia.

“Search engines are programs that search documents for specified keywords and returns a list of the documents where the keywords were found,” says Webopedia.

“Computer program that searches databases and internet sites for the documents containing keywords specified by a user,” says Business Dictionary.

Whichever of these definitions you go with, they look at the search engines from the angle of a common internet user. However, we look at this differently since we are a search engine optimization company helping businesses to grab opportunities available on the web.

We define search engine as a business platform, “A search engine is a business platform that has endless business opportunities for a business.”

Say this shocking, surprising, interesting, or all at the same time, a large number of people do not see any difference between the internet and Google. To them, Google is the internet. Whenever they have to search for anything, they simply open Google in the internet browser and type their query. This is the reason that most of the entrepreneurs are fully focused on Google rankings of their website.

  1. Great post Lalit! To be honest, I only use Google all the time. Surprised to see there are a lot more to use lol. Thanks for sharing! Great to know Yahoo is doing well. Totally haven’t heard of Lycos, is it new?

  2. Google is also my most used search engine but bing and Yahoo still have some use in todays world. It’s funny because not until the early 2000’s I only used Yahoo exclusively.

    1. Hi Rajan,

If you want to rank high on these search engines, I would suggest you to read as much as about SEO and these search engines. Alternatively, you can hire a professional who has good experience in SEO.
