Five simple social media practices that will help your SEO activities

Social media has taken over the world; there is no doubt about that. People are on social media platforms at what seems to be every single moment of their lives. They are on Twitter now and a few moments later they will be checking out what Facebook is saying and then reply to messages on Whats app and make group chats on Skype. The social media platforms are just so many. They are a source of entertainment, interaction and inspiration. Most of all, they are sites for promoting your brand. If you have a brand that you want to sell out to the world, the social media platforms will prove to be a great stage for that.

SEO and social media

Being found on a search engine’s first page of a keyword-relevant search is very beneficial for your website. Unfortunately this is easier said than done. You have to do so many things in order for your site to perform well on the search engines. Search engine optimization (SEO) has become a business for many companies. If a site is to be successful on the search engines, these services are necessary. One of the best ways to optimize your website for the search engines is to make use of the social media platforms.

There are several things that you can do on social media that will make it possible for your site to perform extremely well on Bing, Google and other search engines. These practices include:

  1. Growing number of followers

The number of followers and connections that your social media accounts boast of can have a significant influence on your ranking on the search engines. For example if your business has two hundred followers on Twitter, you will not do nearly as well as if you had two million followers on Twitter and another million on Facebook liking your content. This is one of the best ways to grow your business through social media.

A word of caution though! There are those who ‘sell’ followers. Google and Bing have the ability to detect the nature and quality of your followers. If you have 100,000 proxy Instagram or Twitter followers you can rest calm knowing that it will not do much for your site’s overall ranking. You should take time and build your follower base organically.

  1. Promoting external inbound links

Social media is vital because it encourages many more external sites to link to your website. It is common knowledge that the more external links (diverse ones) you have the more authority Google assumes you have. Of course you will need to have premium quality content that is authoritative to start with. If you do not have this, then you have found a starting point.

  1. Promote your content online

There are bloggers who can afford to post content and not promote it on social media platforms because they are already famous. People will always go to their websites to check out that content. However, you have to promote your posts online. The moment you post something online, you should proceed to notify people within your social media network of your posts. It helps a lot to do this. Nonetheless, you should be careful about the posting time. You do not want to post something on social media when people are asleep or they are working. The post will be lost somewhere in their newsfeed.

  1. Sharing other peoples’ content

This is a bit tricky but then it complies with one of the many rules of social media of sharing other people’s content. Do not be selfish with your sharing and retweets. This is how it works, when you share other people’s high quality content with guys in your network, they tend to trust you as an authoritative person- you know what high quality content looks like. Therefore, they will be visiting your social media profile to get the best quality. Even when you post your own content, they will want to check it out.

  1. Follow people

There is a habit of people following and then unfollowing the moment the other person follows them back. It happens a lot on Twitter and Instagram. People do not want to have more following than followers. Honestly, it is rude and a bit desperate. You should follow people online and especially so the industry influencers. When they follow you back because of the quality of content you have, be rest assured that your content will be exposed to huge masses.

Conclusion

There is no way that you can pull social media out of the whole process of search engine optimization. There are several simple things that you can do on social media that will bring your ranking a notch higher. Some of these practices are as simple as just clicking that ‘follow’ button on Twitter or some other social media site.
